Expanding the FAWE primary school in Mattru Jong to include students in grades 7, 8, and 9 has been a DREAM of the teachers there since its foundation.

In 2019,  KidsGive agreed to help FAWE school achieve its dream.  After a delay caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, phase 1 of the project (foundation) began in early 2022. KidsGive volunteers from Lawrence University visited Mattru Jong in March and Dec. 2022 to see progress on phase 2 (walls) and phase 3 (roof). Work continued on the school in 2023 and completion of the entire school is expected in early 2024.

When opened, the new school will provide community education for 150 girls in classes 7, 8, and 9.  Having a school close to their homes means that the girls will be able to be educated in a safer and secure environment.

Parents and community members are excited about the completion of the school, expected in 2024. When interviewed by KidsGive volunteers from Lawrence University. they expressed these sentiments:

"When a girl receives an education and goes to school, the whole family is better off."

"When you educate a girl, it is a boost to the community.:"

"Education is important because it makes daughters stronger when they finish."

KidsGive is grateful for support from our friends and donors around the world, and community stakeholders in Mattru Jong, include head teacher, Agnes Yankuba, all the teachers and staff, local government officials, and traditional leaders for their contribution and encouragement throughout the project.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Fanta Jatta '24: "The FAWE building project was really special because to me it exemplifies what KidsGive is all about. It was so exciting to know that soon girls will be going to school near their home. I loved meeting all the children at FAWE during our volunteer trip in December 2022.  I'm excited to work more with KidsGive in the future."
